A statement for our community on reproductive justice

June 24, 2022

VCU GSWS wholeheartedly affirms people’s right to safe and legal abortion access, which has been jeopardized and effectively dismantled by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

We affirm abortion care as essential health care and note that many states have passed “trigger” laws outlawing abortion services entirely, which will have disastrous consequences.

We also affirm what many others have already said: that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is patently and systemically racist, (hetero)sexist, and transphobic. We know that the most vulnerable–those who have limited access to necessary health care, and those who are refused or intimidated out of such care–will suffer the most. In short, it won’t be the wealthy and the white who will be most at risk.

It is our department’s mission to work for transformative justice, and we will continue to do so. We are a safe space for all who want or need it.

We encourage the members of our community to take care of themselves and each other. Resources and opportunities to organize can be found through the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood and The Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project, and if so inclined, to urge Congress to restore abortion rights and reproductive health care nationwide.
